Organization DThe Indiana University Digital Library Program (http://www.dlib.indiana.edu) was established in 1997, a collaborative venture among: University Libraries (IUL) University Information Technology Services (UITS) School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) School of Informatics Funding provided by the Libraries and UITS.FPP,P/"0 00K Goals [1/2]$ To provide financial support and additional human resources for existing digital initiatives, including LETRS, the Library Electronic Text Resource Service; VARIATIONS, a digital music library; and DIDO, an art image database created by the Slide Library. Goals [2/2]$ To provide infrastructure, financial support, and expertise to develop new digital initiatives across the campuses of Indiana University. To provide leadership in the development of digital libraries locally, nationally, and internationally. Staff [1/2]$ +12.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) permanent staff 3 librarians 9 information technology professionals 1 support staff (.5 FTE) 10 grant-funded programmers/project manager Student staff, including graduate assistants and interns from the School of Library and Information Science and Computer Science B1ZMZZ1M Staff [2/2]$ Other staff spend a portion of their time on Digital Library Program projects and initiatives. For a complete list of our staff and their titles, see: http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/aboutus/aboutus-people.htm (996 0 University Funding [1/2] Internal funding from the Libraries and Information Technology Services supports: Infrastructure hardware, software, staff Production Services: Library Electronic Text Resource Service (LETRS), Digital Media and Image Center (DMIC) Instructional services: Variations Digital Music Library, Digital Images Delivered Online (DIDO) Consultation with organizational units and individuals \RZ3ZZZR3 University Funding [2/2]$Collaborative ventures to support the development of digital libraries Examples: TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) Consortium; RLG Cultural Materials Alliance Projects Short-term and smaller, local projects Example: Frank Hohenberger Photographs Pilot projects and prototypes for large projects Example: Film Literature Index Online Collaborative projects with partners within the university or with other institutions Example: Wright American Fiction Project GZVZ Z'Z'Z1Z(ZVZ*ZZGV ''1 V* Grant FundingGrant funding (more than $4 million since 1998) Large-scale research projects funded by National Science Foundation Institute for Museum and Library Services U.S. Department of Education National Endowment for the HumanitiesR1) ")Major ActivitiesDeveloping and maintaining digital library infrastructure hardware, software, staff expertise Creation of digital resources for instruction (Variations and DIDO) Creation of digital resources for research (archival collections, indexes) Consultation with individuals and department who have ideas about potential digital projectsLPLDigital Projects,Conversion from an analog to a digital format Creation of metadata for digital objects Development of systems to store and provide access to created digital content We provide technical expertise needed to create the digital resource, store the content and metadata, provide persistent access to it. -TKey Elements Good digital collections Interoperable with the important goal of cross-collection searching Within Indiana University Across other institutions worldwide Persistent reliably accessible Re-usable repositories of digital objects that can be used for multiple purposes JHZ>ZtZZH>u What have we learned? There s no such thing as a local digital library Importance of integrated access. Your content is part of a larger digital library. Metadata It s expensive but no one wants to browse unidentified images. Partnerships and Collaboration Partnerships are essential for everyone. Types of partnerships and partners will vary depending upon local expertise and the nature of the project. Costs Everything costs more than you estimate. Everything takes longer than you estimate see previous point. TP2P P?PPPPiPPPT2 ? i Common MisconceptionszSelection for digitization is similar to selection for purchase or license; the same criteria and procedures should apply. It s not that expensive or that difficult. We all know how to use a scanner and make a Web site. It s too expensive for most libraries to adhere to digital library standards and best practices.>>Selection for Digitization~The process begins with the same factors audience/potential audience -- but quickly adds new ones, for example: Copyright status Condition of the originals Format and/or size of originals &rNrNExpense and DifficultyIt is expensive to digitize according to standards and recommended best practices requiring time and a high level of skill. Important to apply quality control procedures for digitization and metadata creation. (See me for horror stories!) The Web is a delivery mechanism; also need a digital repository with a content management system. Remember preservation.lZlStandards and Best PracticesDespite the expense and difficulty, there is no point in digitizing content for long-term retention unless you do it properly meaning, according to standards and recommended best practices. Will not be reusable. Will not meet quality standards. Recommendations [1/2]$Write project proposals; start simple and augment as you work through the planning process. Start: What do you want to do? If you lack resources or technical expertise, find partners. Select projects carefully; sometimes a project just will not work out. Better to find it before you begin. Once you begin, be prepared to change plans or procedures; must be flexible. Focus on the destination, not the path. .PPRecommendations [2/2]$2 Reuse can apply to your methods, not just the digital objects you create. Learn from past projects. Try to balance standard features with value-added features (e.g. Cushman roll browse). Share what you have done and what you have learned on your web site at the very least. *%General Readings on Digital Libraries&% %Institute for Museum and Library Services.
