Next-Generation Catalogs:
New Worlds to Explore

Indiana Online Users Group Spring 2009 Program
Indiana Wesleyan University Indianapolis Education Center, North, Indianapolis, IN
May 15, 2009

Join your IOLUG colleagues for a day of programming centered on "Next-Generation Catalogs." Learn about the next-gen catalog movement and features of these new interfaces, from user reviews and images to more intuitive searching. Through keynotes and other sessions hear from librarians who have managed these solutions hands-on—their successes and challenges, as well as attempts to meet user needs and expectations using this new set of tools. We'll also explore several of the next-gen catalog products and add-ons currently in use in libraries across the country and provide an update on open source ILS's in Indiana. Come to IOLUG Spring '09 and explore these new worlds!

UPDATE - IOLUG has received approval as an Indiana Library Education Unit Provider and the Spring 2009 Program is worth a total of 6 Technology LEUs.

Speakers:

Eric Lease Morgan (University of Notre Dame) - Opening Keynote: "Next Generation" Library Catalogs
This presentation will outline some of the possibilities for "next-generation" library catalogs. Specifically it will describe the technology behind these applications, enumerate ways they can exploit our set of globally networked computers, and posit opportunities for new and improved services within and around them. Librarianship has traditionally been about collection, preservation, organization, and re-distribution. These over-arching goals are still relevant in today's environment, but the methods the profession can use to achieve them is changing. The venerable library catalog and the thing it seems to be morphing into is just one example. This presentation brings together the how's and why's of this issue.

Pascal Calarco and Mark Dehmlow (University of Notre Dame) - We Have to do What by When?! Decisioning a Next-Gen Catalog Procurement Recommendation in Six Weeks or Less
Analyzing, decisioning, planning and implementing technology projects effectively and with agility in libraries today requires broad ownership, inclusion, and transparency throughout the entire project lifecycle. Join us for the story of how we achieved a consensus model for making a recommendation on a next-gen catalog in Spring 2008 for a small consortium of libraries in northern Indiana. Hang onto your hats!

Gary Charbonneau (Indiana University Bloomington) - WorldCat Local: Product Overview and Indiana University's Implementation Experience
This session will provide an overview of OCLC's WorldCat Local product. It will describe how the product is being implemented at Indiana University and discuss some of the obstacles that had to be overcome in the course of the implementation. Next-Generation Catalogs: Current Solutions (Session Moderator: Michael Witt, Purdue University)
Buckle your seat belts as representatives from the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science at Indianapolis present 18 different software solutions that provide next-generation library catalog functionality! The solutions will be explained in concise, five-minute presentations over the course of this 90-minute session, which will be followed by a 30-minute demonstration session where conference participants can interact with the presenters one-on-one and ask questions about the solutions that were presented.

Sean Robinson (Allen County Public Library) - Ending Keynote Session: Exploring the Borderlands between ILS 1.0 and 2.0
Leprechauns, Centaurs and 2.0 Integrated Library Systems have one thing in common, they don't exist. However, there is a space between ILS 1.0 and 2.0 where custom 2.0 services can be added. We will look at folksonomies, online payment, spell checking, embedded IM clients, customer request forms, text services and book reviews. We will investigate new ways to deliver information to our customers and provide them with new options for searching. And finally, we peer into the future and focus on a small group of libraries that are quickly approaching the mythical 2.0.
